The Functions and Importance of the Indian Parliament

Abstract

The Indian Parliament is a central institution of the country's constitutional and democratic system. It performs legislative, representative, financial, deliberative, and accountability functions and provides a national forum for addressing public concerns. Parliament consists of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, which together participate in law-making and the scrutiny of government. Parliamentary questions, debates, motions, committees, and financial procedures provide mechanisms for examining executive action and public expenditure. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the functions and importance of the Indian Parliament, including legislation, representation, financial control, executive accountability, deliberation, committee work, constitutional responsibilities, federal representation, and contemporary challenges.
