The Role of Citizens in Strengthening Democracy and Good Governance

Abstract

Citizens are central to democratic governance because democracy depends on public participation, accountability, informed decision-making, and respect for constitutional values. The role of citizens extends beyond voting to include political awareness, participation in public institutions, community engagement, monitoring government performance, responsible use of information, and fulfillment of civic duties. In India, constitutional rights and duties provide an important framework for responsible citizenship, while democratic institutions create opportunities for citizens to influence public affairs. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the role of citizens in strengthening democracy and good governance, including electoral participation, political awareness, public accountability, civic responsibility, community participation, digital citizenship, social inclusion, respect for law, and contemporary challenges.
