Abstract

Human activities have transformed terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems on an unprecedented scale. Agriculture, urbanization, industrial development, resource extraction, pollution, infrastructure expansion, overexploitation, and greenhouse-gas emissions can alter habitats, ecological interactions, nutrient cycles, and the capacity of ecosystems to maintain essential functions. These pressures may reduce biodiversity, degrade soil and water quality, disrupt food webs, and weaken ecological resilience. At the same time, sustainable management, ecological restoration, protected areas, pollution control, and responsible resource use can reduce environmental impacts. This paper examines nine major dimensions of human influence on ecosystem health, including land-use change, pollution, resource exploitation, urbanization, climate change, biodiversity loss, freshwater systems, marine ecosystems, and strategies for sustainable ecosystem management.
