Abstract

Emerging viral diseases represent a continuing biological and public-health challenge. Viral emergence can occur when viruses expand into new hosts, acquire genetic or phenotypic changes, enter new geographic areas, or become more efficiently transmitted in human populations. These processes are influenced by viral evolution, host susceptibility, ecological disruption, animal reservoirs, human mobility, climate and environmental conditions, and interactions among pathogens and hosts. Emerging viruses can affect individuals, healthcare systems, economies, wildlife, and ecosystems. This paper examines nine major biological dimensions of emerging viral diseases, including viral evolution, zoonotic emergence, host-virus interactions, transmission, immune responses, environmental and ecological drivers, genomic surveillance, prevention and therapeutics, and broader biological implications.
