The Role of Homeopathy in Contemporary Alternative Healthcare Practices

Abstract

Homeopathy is a traditional complementary health system that has remained visible in contemporary alternative healthcare despite continuing scientific debate concerning its effectiveness. Developed in Germany more than 200 years ago, homeopathy is based on principles commonly described as “like cures like” and the use of highly diluted preparations. This paper examines the role of homeopathy in contemporary alternative healthcare practices, focusing on its historical development, patient perspectives, individualized consultations, use alongside conventional healthcare, regulation, research evidence, safety, communication, and future directions. Homeopathy is used in many countries as part of the broader traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine landscape. The World Health Organization recognizes traditional and complementary medicine as a global healthcare phenomenon and emphasizes that integration should be evidence-based, culturally respectful, safe, and appropriately regulated. However, major evidence assessments have not established reliable effectiveness of homeopathy for specific health conditions.
